Basically Wonderful Inc. is a grassroots nonprofit organization run by Queer + Disabled folks in Orlando, Florida, USA. We were founded in 2021, and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2024!
We are creating peer-led spaces where folks can feel connected to a broader community and support system. Our groups and events provide opportunities for both Disabled & LGBTQIA+ folks to find belonging and thrive in identity-driven spaces. We are fostering unique and absolutely necessary occasions for our Queer Trans and Disabled comrades to experience much-deserved care, access, and moments of joy.
Disabled folks are historically barred from opportunities to socialize, find resources, and seek care due to ableism & inaccessibility. Most community spaces lack intentionality and tend to be designed without accessibility in mind, so intentional support networks for disabled adults in Central Florida are few and far between – we’re proud to be one of the few.
Our goal is to make all of our spaces as intentionally accessible as we can for our disabled and neurodivergent friends. We aim to be thoroughly anti-ableist, and acknowledge that accessibility is an ongoing need that can always be improved upon; we honor that everyone's access needs are different and we will always do what we can to meet those needs. We are strong believers that everyone deserves proper access.
The need for support for multiply marginalized people is incredibly important. Disabled, queer, and trans folks face higher levels of interpersonal and systemic violence than their non-disabled and non-LGBTQIA+ peers; we are also more likely to be forced into poverty, be denied opportunities for employment and education, and lack access to necessary care and support options. Members of our community often feel lost trying to find connections and resources that reflect their whole authentic selves and understand the unique experiences we must face.
Often, pride spaces are inaccessible to Queer Disabled folks - which is surprising, considering that over 1/3 of the LGBTQIA+ population in the USA identify as being disabled! We deserve access to spaces that allow us to fully express ourselves and be celebrated without having to compromise any part of our identity or be denied access entirely. Pride for all, not just for some.
We are dedicated to creating essential spaces that fill these support gaps and celebrate intersectional solidarity within the LGBTQIA+ and Disability communities.
A supportive community space can sincerely be a powerful, life-saving gift. Our community often keeps us grounded, gives us access to necessary resources, provides us a soft place to land when we need it, helps us better understand ourselves and others, connects us with people who share our values, gives us a space to be creative and find passions, and allows us to continually take care of each other.
Basically Wonderful has lovingly curated an array of spaces that authentically promote care and connection for our community members. The community we’re creating encourages folks to freely express themselves, find solace and belonging amongst people who truly understand, find reciprocal support and resources, and so many more important opportunities for connection. We want folks to join our spaces and feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued.
